There, Maude-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne and Jean-Martin Fortier have been cultivating one hectare of land for a good ten years, growing 40 varieties of vegetables that they market directly &#8211; and live well with. &#8220;The key to success is to move away from a tractor-oriented approach to a\u00a0people-oriented approach,&#8221; said the Fortiers at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Their\u00a0microfarm\u00a0is one of the best-known examples of\u00a0new agricultural concepts, \u201cwhich have impressive effects due to their systemic approach. They are very\u00a0productive on small areas\u00a0and are called\u00a0bio-intensive agriculture,\u00a0market gardening\u00a0or\u00a0micro-farms,\u201d writes the Stiftung \u00d6kologie&amp;Landbau (S\u00d6L) for explanation. \u201cInspired by agricultural ecology and permaculture, they are economically profitable, ecologically valuable and socially respectful. Their\u00a0low investment costs\u00a0make these concepts particularly interesting for young people wishing to enter the agricultural sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ridgedale Farm<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Ecological <\/strong><strong>and profitable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richard Perkins of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridgedalepermaculture.com\/\">Swedish Ridgedale Farm<\/a>\u00a0presented\u00a0techniques and approaches\u00a0that make it\u00a0possible to make small farms ecologically valuable and economically viable. &#8220;It is our responsibility to regenerate our landscape through small profitable farms that bring people back into farming,&#8221; said Perkins.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Support for small farmers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Fermes d\u2019avenir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maxime de Rostolan founded the\u00a0organisation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fermesdavenir.org\/\">Fermes d&#8217;avenir<\/a>\u00a0five years ago. In France, this organisation\u00a0supports agro-ecological smallholder initiatives\u00a0through appropriate\u00a0training formats,\u00a0advisory services,\u00a0model farms\u00a0as well as\u00a0lobbying\u00a0and\u00a0public relations work.
